Born in Punjab in India in 1957, Sunil Mittal’s father was a Member of Parliament. He is streetsmart rather than booksmart, he was not a particularly good student. At age 18, he borrowed money from his father to start a bicycle manufacturing business. He soon moved to Dehli and started a very successful business importing Japanese electric generator. In 1991, he won a license to import telecom equipment and then push button phones. With passion, speed and conviction, he built Airtel into one of largest telecom company in the world, with presence in 18 countries and more than 474 million users. In 2021, he got embroiled in a bitter price war with Mukesh Ambani’s phone company Jio. Mukesh Ambani is India’s richest man. So far, he is holding on the competition while most of the other telecom giants faltered. The secret of his success is to look big when you were a tiny company.
