“GENDER is the second show in the series I started with the KINGS & QUEENS show in 2000. It’s a celebration of the gender spectrum starring queer performers, shot on film and printed and solarized by Bob Carnie.
Solarization is both contemporary and in the tradition of Man Ray. It flips the grey scale and creates a surreal image that seems appropriate for this subject. I want to make them look like rock stars, superheroes. It’s about celebration, not just tolerance.
In KINGS & QUEENS in 2000 the goal was to be passable. The performers were trying to appear as the opposite gender. Today there is much more diversity and less stereotypes. There’s a more complex sense of self and character. Gender is now a spectrum instead of binary.”

FROM THE VIDEOGRAPHER
I video-recorded Kevin’s photo shoot of performers at Judy and Igby’s Easter Camp Cabaret at the Drake Underground this past April 5. Footage from this video shoot was used to compile the four videos I have presented here on YouTube, and also over on Vimeo.
I will be official videographer, with multiple cameras, at the GENDER opening. I will also be documenting Kevin distributing show postcards at Trans Pride, Friday June 26, and Pride Parade, Sunday June 28, both in downtown Toronto. Should make for some very colourful footage.
