This film weaves together improvisations by dancers at an unnamed garden gateway in Lodi Garden, Delhi. The movement sequences are their spontaneous responses to the site and to minimal direction. After the fact, narrative fragments were found and edited together to music. (Scroll down for full credits.)
This piece is part of the Buildings Bodies Breath project by Fulbright-Nehru grant recipient Parijat Desai, exploring Islamic architectural sites in Delhi and Ahmedabad through movement and film. During Phase I of the project, Parijat took groups of dancers to explore various sites in Delhi, and captured those movement improvisations with photos. (See facebook.com/ParijatDesaiDanceCompany/photos_albums in albums titled “Buildings Bodies Breath.”)
During Phase II, she began capturing dancers’ improvisations using film. From those adventures, she’s made this and another short, “Improvisations at Mehrauli 2,” at vimeo.com/89316370.
During Phase III, Parijat will work with a cast of women and men to develop more intentional scenes to be filmed at selected sites in Delhi. To stay in touch with this project, “Like” us at facebook.com/ParijatDesaiDanceCompany or join the e-mail list at parijatdesai.org/contact.php.
