Last week we saw Jesus encounter Nicodemus, a man that by the world’s standards had it all together and at the top of the ladder.
This week we look at Jesus’ encounter with the Woman at the Well who is at the very bottom of the ladder. Even though she was a mess and had nothing to benefit Jesus’ ministry, he went out of his way to connect with this woman.
Seeing these stories together as we do in John 3 and John 4 show us that the gospel is effective to all people in all social/economical situations and we need to encounter all people on a personal level with the transformative gospel of Jesus Christ.
What is your encounter with Jesus like? How do you show your encounter to those around you each day?
Scripture verses referenced:
Joel 2:13, Isaiah 49:15-16, Matthew 9:36, John 4:1-42, Jeremiah 2:13, Isaiah 12:3
Quote from John Piper: “Worship must be vital and real in the heart, and worship must rest on a true perception of God. Worship must have truth and spirit! Truth without emotion produces dead orthodoxy and a church full (or half-full) of artificial admirers . . . On the other hand, emotion without truth produces empty frenzy and cultivates shallow people who refuse the discipline of rigorous thought. But true worship comes from people who are deeply emotional and who love deep and sound doctrine. Strong affections for God rooted in truth are the bone and marrow of biblical worship.”
Quote from David Foster Wallace: “Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god to worship is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, then you will never have enough. Worship your own body and beauty and you will always feel ugly. Worship power, and you will end up feeling weak and afraid and you’ll need more power over others to numb you to your own fear. Look the insidious thing about these forms of worship is not that they are evil it’s that they are unconscious. They are default settings.”
